Do you ever feed wild birds from your bare hands

1972-jackman, Maine

In 1972, I used to travel up to the mountains on the northwestern border between Maine and Quebec, Canada. I went to high school in Jackman, Maine. My parents had a log cabin on the shore of Big Wood Lake.

When it snowed, the wild birds waited for the feeders to be filled. The wild birds were never scared to eat out of your bare hands.

Try it some time….

Sometime in late August last year, before the school started, my fiancee and I went to one the most beautiful, somewhat a local preservation parks slash gardens in Toronto. And it really is a preservation, because oh so many little animals were there: we could recognise 3 types of squirrels alone!

And so there were various beautiful birds, too; we decided to try to feed them. It took some time, before the first few birds finally got over the fear, as they started flying closer and closer and then very close to our hands, ripping the little seeds we had out of our hands, and eventually they became really brave, as they just landed onto our hands and picked the food up.

    It was absolutely wonderful!
