About
Born in Baltimore, Maryland, and raised on my parents Maryland dairy.
The family sold their dairy and moved to the Northwestern wilderness of Maine during the early 1960s. After graduating from high school, I went to school in Oklahoma.
I have spent the past 42 years working in the world of engineering and scientist in Southern Maine for international and national corporations. At the moment – International!
My wife and I are planning to retire in the Southwestern USA. Looking forward to being surrounded by ancient cultures, mountains, and the high desert.
Currently enjoying Scrivener for Mac – character studies, fiction, and poetry…

Unfortunately, sad news for me.
I got the message: “Warning: We have a concern about some of the content on your blog. Please click here to contact us as soon as possible to resolve the issue and re-enable posting.” I did click, but so far my posting has not been re-anabled. I am totally puzzled why this happened to me. Maybe some freakish computer software?? Kafka-esqie!

I can blog again now after a half day interruption. Some freakish WordPress computer had stopped me from blogging “because of my blog content”. Fortunately, WordPress staff has corrected that now.

Yes, my whole old Blogsome archive is by now transfered to WordPress. At first only the old entries of 2005-2007, as there is a maximum size of 15k. Then, I asked WordPress staff to transfer the whole archive, and they eventually did it, after I had finally managed to send them such a big attachment (with Sendbigfiles).

I would like to hear more about your current home state…I’ve always been fascinated by Maine, I guess maybe because it’s the furthest point on the continental U.S. from where I grew up on the west coast, and also because it always seemed so old world and romantic. I’ve only been there once many years ago; when I was 16 I hitchiked up the Maine coast (beautiful!), this was in the 1970′s and haven’t been back there since…

David,
Thank you for visiting my blog, and for sharing your poetic and prose gifts here. You are making excellent use of your new time to practice your craft and share your gift.
I’m thinking about picking up Scrivener as well…..very tempted, though I’m not a techie at all and want super simple. It might be my summer project.
Cheers!

I’ve subscribed to your blog via my RSS. Just reading a bit of your blog, I’m fascinated by your life and memoirs. As a young girl, I wrote poetry and Haiku’s, mostly as therapy to release the heartache and frustration of my teenage years. I find your prose beautiful and soul-touching.
Thank you also, for visiting my blog. I hope you have good memories of your time in Oklahoma. I came here from Nebraska 22 years ago today. I love the warm weather…

i used to visit most of the areas in Oklahoma during weekends – have traveled through Nebraska – my grandparents lived near Sioux Falls, South Dakota – they broke and shipped horses to NYC to be used as carriage horses in the late 1800s – early 1900s. – my grandmother was bowlegged the rest of her life!

Thanks for liking my post on butternut squash soup and thus introducing me to your site where I was immediately rewarded by that magical feeling that washes over me when I read a good haiku. Then to learn you have some Maine roots and cow farm roots to boot was an added gift. My husband grew up in West Buxton, Maine and spent his summers on a dairy farm in Vergennes, Vermont so although we are now in North Carolina, a piece of us will always be up above the Mason Dixon. I grew up in NJ but spent every chance I got with relatives in ME and VT. Very much looking forward to reading your work on the Maine Wilderness.

Thanks for visiting my blog. It’s always nice to have it affirmed that someone is reading it. I found your “About” interesting. I love Maryland, have cousins there, and visit often. I’ve only been to Maine once, but your story of ice fishing suggests it wouldn’t be the ideal place for me. It’s cold enough in Chicago. As for your plains to head out to the Southwest, I applaud that choice. I love the high desert. I’ve got friends in Alamogordo, and it’s a really remarkable area — a strange, haunting beauty everywhere you go in that part of the country.
I enjoyed your haiku, too. I imagine I’ll return for those. Pleased to know you thought my blog was worth following. See you online.

There are so many interesting and thought-provoking entries here it almost makes me feel like I haven’t even gotten started. My favorite entries are the ones where you discuss the classic poets and poetry, and your reminiscing of your illustrious life. What a treasure trove of memories, thoughts, and reflections.
Your appreciation of my poem feels even better now that I have seen the source of the soul who liked it. It is a high compliment…and I thank you…..John H.

Hi, I just stopped by to say thank you for visiting and following my blog. I stayed to read some of your work, of course. I especially like the Haiku — so much richness in such few words. I was particularly struck by the words, “seized by a longing, moments we feel outside time.” And I guess I am totally different from most of your readers. I glanced over some of the comments, and I didn’t see anyone else who had the same response I had to the “last figure eight.” I felt sure you were referring to the fact that the skater was out in the midst of all that beauty, but on too thin ice, and that he is executing his “last” figure 8 because he falls through the ice and dies. So sorry.
I envy you and your wife living in Maine. The two places I would dearly love to reside are The Smoky Mountains of Tennessee/North Carolina and Maine, right on the coast. I’m out of time to visit tonight, but I will be back. The Lord bless you.

Thank you for visiting. WordPress is new to me, so I’m a real greenhorn at the subtleties. I’ve been going through a dry spell with my writing, but hope to spend more time with it.
Love your Haiku – it does what Haiku should, and leaves wonderful visions. I’m from Long Island, grew up here, but more east than I am now, when it was all farms, fields and woodlands. I miss that Long Island. I am looking forward to retiring to the Southeast.

Thank you for visiting and for adding to my meager band of followers. I love the reminiscent quality to your work. I love the memories your Haiku’s bring to mind. In reading your Bio, I see we also share a geographical link. I lived just outside of Baltimore, in Carroll County, for several years having moved there from Vermont where my family were dairy farmers. One of the many states I have lived since was Maine, where part of my heart still resides. I also have a sibling who settled in Oklahoma and while the flat terrain is not my favorite, it certainly has a beauty all its own. I look forward to visiting your blog for a regular dose of nostalgia.

Sometimes, I do too. The older I get, the harder it is for my “plumbing” to process dairy, yet I find I continue to gravitate toward them just for Old Time’s Sake. Sad…but true! Might be easier to go out and adopt a cow!

Hi 5R … lovely atmospheric blog. I have been to America (mainly Ohio) and I am a sucker for the endless landscapes and the endless literature they give birth to. Hello! I too was born in MD (though now I live in SC) and hope to one day reside in the beautiful SW desert. The title of your blog is really interesting-unique and attention getting. (At least for a fellow writer prone to reflecting!) I look forward to reading more of your work.
Thank you for visiting my blog! (ps-you have such a kind face!)

Nice to see you again David. I’m glad you liked Shower Head Revisited. It’s been a while since I’ve been able to enjoy your work, I’ve decided to spend a quite day tomorrow in reflection (that’s the plan anyway) and can think of no better place than to do it than here.
